Enterocyte Markers

Enterocyte is a type of epithelial cell of the superficial layer of the small and large intestine tissue. These cells can help break up molecules and transport them into the tissues.

Amino-Peptidase N

Carbonic Anhydrase (CA)

  • an enzyme that is expressed in the intestine. CA I and II appear to be good markers for the differentiation of enterocytes in the colonic mucosa. PMID: 9879596

CarbamoylphosphateSynthase (CPS)

CD10

Dipeptidyl Peptidase IV (DDP IV, CD26)

  • expressed in rat jejunal enterocytes. PMID: 9803471
  • DPP IV biosynthesis exclusively increases in cells that display an enterocytic differentiation. PMID: 1347043

E-Cadherin

  • E-cadherin controls enterocyte-specific expression of genes, such as the apoA-IV gene, through the control of hepatic nuclear factor 4alpha nuclear abundance. PMID: 16338932
  • located at lateral plasma membranes of histologically normal enterocytes. PMID: 15705912

Enterocytin

  • A new specific enterocyte marker bearing a B30.2-like domain. PMID: 14755549

Glucoamylase

  • reacts only with the brush border region of the enterocyte. PMID: 20974

GlucoseTransporter-5 (GLUT5)

  • GLUT5 was present in both apical brush border membrane (BBM) and basolateral membrane (BLM) the human intestine, suggesting that it specifically participates in the transfer of fructose across the basal membrane of the enterocyte. PMID: 7619085

IAP (intestinal alkaline phosphatase)

I-FABP (intestinal fatty acid-binding protein)

  • a small intestine-specific fatty acid binding proteinthat represents approximately 3% of the cytoplasmic proteinof enterocytes, is commonly used as a marker of enterocytedifferentiation. PMID: 16782882
  • play a role in enterocyte fatty acid (FA) trafficking. PMID: 11329616
  • participate in the uptake, intracellular metabolism, and/or transport of long chain fatty acids within enterocytes. PMID: 2824476

L-FABP (liver fatty acid-binding protein)

  • enterocyte-specific marker. PMID: 14645557
  • L-FABP and I-BABP genes exert the same type of basic function(s) in the enterocyte, in contrast to I-FABP. PMID: 12479579
  • Intestinal enterocytes contain high concentrations of two cytosolic fatty acid-binding proteins (FABP), liver FABP (L-FABP) and intestinal FABP (I-FABP), which are hypothesized to play a role in cellular fatty acid trafficking. PMID: 10744786
  • first detectable at fetal day 17 and at this time of first appearance shows an adult pattern of regional enterocytic expression. PMID: 1706343

Lactase

  • the intestinal disaccharidase responsible for digestion of lactose, the predominant carbohydrate in milk. Transcription of the lactase gene is activated during enterocyte differentiation. Cdx2 interaction with the lactase promoter correlates with enterocyte differentiation. PMID: 10611160

Lectins

  • enterocyte specific cell markers using lectin histochemistry. PMID: 14650444

Neutral Endopeptidase (Endopeptidase 24.11; NEP; neprilysin)

  • an integral membrane protein, typically associated with brush border epithelia, expressed in both embryo and adult mouse enterocytes. PMID: 8026647

Plasma Citrulline

  • a nonprotein amino acid produced by enterocytes, a marker of remnant enterocyte mass in patients with short bowel. PMID: 12730862PMID: 11113071
  • a simple quantitative marker for small intestinal enterocytes mass and absorption function in short bowel patients. PMID: 15921697

Sodium Glucose co-Transporter 1 (SGLT1)

  • expressed in the ovine enterocyte and the parotid acinar cell. PMID: 7492327

Sucrase Isomaltase (SI)

  • an intrinsic glycoprotein of the brush border membrane, found not only in the brush border membrane, but also in the endoplasmic reticulum including nuclear envelope, Golgi complex, smooth apical vesicles, and to a variable extent in the multivesicular bodies in the rat enterocyte. PMID: 3536655

Villin

  • a major microvillar cytoskeletal actin-binding protein, typically associated with brush border epithelia, expressed in both embryo and adult mouse enterocytes. PMID: 8026647
  • villin mRNA was expressed at high levels in the small intestine, to a lesser degree in the colon, and was not detected in the brain or liver. PMID: 9834375

Zonula Occludens (ZO1, ZO-1)

  • a tight junction associated protein considered a good marker of their integrity. PMID: 15205571

Other Enterocyte Markers

  • The filamentous brush border glycocalyx, a mucin-like marker of enterocyte hyper-polarization. PMID: 7535695
